My work as director of communication for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences keeps me more than a little busy. I am a team of one. My main task is to tell our college’s stories, and there are more great things going on here than one person could possibly share.

My experience of MALS changed my life in big ways. As an executive coach, I had a specific line of research that I wanted to conduct and it involved the combination of studies from two departments, so the MALS program had the flexibility I needed to focus specifically on what I wanted to learn.
Carol Frey, Alumna
Five years ago, I ended my 35-year career in daily newspaper journalism as an editorial writer for The News & Observer in Raleigh. My husband, Ed Miller, had been called out of military retirement to a job in Army readiness at the Pentagon and our daughter, then a junior at N.C. State, was more than capable of living at home with the dog and two cats. So for four years, I free-lanced in D.C., wrote a novel, and traveled back to Raleigh once a month or so. When the Army found a need for Ed at Ft. Bragg, we moved back home and the MALS program opened the opportunity for me to (finally) work on a master’s degree.

I received my MALS degree at 45 years of age. I have been a pastor for over 20 years. I began the program while serving a church in Raleigh and was able to complete my degree with online classes after moving to Dare County two years ago. I live in Manteo with my wife and 2 high school age children. I am pastor of Manteo Faith Baptist Church (since January, 2010).
